Governors from the South-West states of Nigeria have decided to create a joint security force to tackle increasing security challenges, such as the reported influx of Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram militants into the region.

This decision was made on Thursday during a meeting of the South-West Governors’ Forum at Lagos House in Ikeja.

The forum also discussed issues related to food security and economic collaboration.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who presented the 11-point communiqué following the closed-door meeting, stressed the pressing need for improved security coordination.

“The Forum strongly condemns any threats to the region’s security and encourages collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and local security outfits.

“A Joint Surveillance Monitoring Team will be established to oversee security efforts across the South-West,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

The governors also resolved to enhance intelligence sharing among state security agencies, local networks, and federal law enforcement authorities to tackle emerging threats.

Governors in attendance included Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), and Ademola Adeleke (Osun).

Beyond security, the governors addressed the rising cost of food and agreed to establish food hubs and an inter-state monitoring team to curb price inflation.

The Forum expressed concern over the role of middlemen in artificially inflating food prices and committed to collaborative measures to stabilize food supply chains.

However, the governors reaffirmed their support for the South-West Development Commission (SWDC) and agreed to site its headquarters at Cocoa House, Ibadan.

The meeting commended Odu’a Investment Company and the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission for their roles in economic development and regional industrialization.
